GROUND CONTACT ANALYSIS – 26’’ VS 27.5’’
The fatbike is currently evolving towards the 27.5’’ wheel size, recognized to be faster and more efficient in traction, the larger diameter delivering a longer ground contact surface. To support this assertion, we compared three well-known 26-inch tires with the 27.5’’ Terrene Cake Eater, which equips all the Spherik 2020 fatbikes.
The test was carried out with 80mm rims, a 75kg driver, at a pressure of 6 PSI.
The footprint left by the three 26-inch tires was similar to 2%, for a surface of 151 cm2. The Terrene Cake Eater 27.5 X 4.5 tire left an impression of the same width, but much longer, for a surface of 286cm2, which represents a difference of 27%. Unlike regular tires, the Cake Eater has a thicker outsole and softer sides, which allow the sole to deform flat, much like a car tire, to leave a floor mark as wide as that of a 4.8 inch tire.
The Terrene Cake Eater is therefore a formidable winter tire, with aggressive studs and a traction surface 27% greater than the best 26-inch snow tires.

Analysis – Inertia and Angle of Attack 26’’ VS 27.5’’
The large diameter of the 27.5’’ wheels offers the advantages of a superior traction surface, but also those of a greater rotational inertia and a better angle of attack.
The angle of attack affects handling when rolling over obstacles. The larger the wheel, the larger the angle, so a larger wheel rolls over obstacles more easily than a smaller wheel. This translates on the trail into a smoother ride, uphill or downhill.
The higher mass of a large wheel may appear to be a disadvantage in terms of static weight, when the bike is stationary. In fact, the heavier the object, the harder it is to set in motion – this is called inertia. On the other hand, once this object is in movement, it will be more difficult to stop – this is called the momentum. The movement of the wheel generates a centripetal acceleration, which increases according to the speed of rotation. This means that once you get moving, it’s easier to stay moving.
